Which Agile Coaching and Training Certifications Are Worth It in 2026?

A 2026 buyer's guide to Scrum Alliance, Scrum.org, Scaled Agile, PMI and ICAgile, using primary vacancy data rather than provider marketing.

The short answer

Certification is no longer the right unit of purchase for agile coaching capability, and the certification bodies themselves moved first. Between 2023 and 2026 every major provider unbundled coaching from certification into short modular credentials, and PMI retired its Disciplined Agile coaching certifications outright.

Three certifications still earn their budget in an enterprise setting, for narrow and specific reasons:

• SAFe Agilist, when you need one shared vocabulary across a large multi-team delivery organisation. SAFe is the only framework in this comparison whose demand as a named skill rose year on year in the UK vacancy data.
• Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM I), as an individual entry credential for someone new to the role, not as evidence of capability.
• PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), where a procurement or public sector process requires a framework-agnostic, ISO-accredited credential.

Everything on the coaching side is now better bought as a short micro-credential attached to a role someone already holds. Buying a coaching certification as a proxy for organisational capability is the specific mistake this article exists to prevent.

What changed between 2023 and 2026

Four structural changes happened in three years, and together they change the answer to the original question.

Consolidation at the top

PMI and the Agile Alliance signed an agreement on 31 December 2024 under which the Agile Alliance joined PMI, now operating as PMI Agile Alliance. PMI had already acquired Disciplined Agile in 2019. The practical effect is that the largest project management institute in the world also now holds one of the largest independent agile communities.

PMI retired its coaching certifications

In 2025 PMI retired the Disciplined Agile Scrum Master (DASM), Disciplined Agile Senior Scrum Master (DASSM), Disciplined Agile Coach (DAC) and Disciplined Agile Value Stream Consultant (DAVSC) certifications. Authorised partners stopped delivering the courses on 31 May 2025 and the final exam sitting was 30 November 2025.

What replaced them is the instructive part. PMI's former DASM certification address now serves an eLearning course called Disciplined Agile Foundations: Approaches to Team Agility. A certification became a course. Existing DASM and DAC holders keep their credentials, but no new ones are being issued.

Scrum Alliance moved coaching out of certification

Scrum Alliance's current certification structure covers Scrum Master, Product Owner, Developer, Facilitation (Certified Agile Facilitator), Leadership (Certified Agile Leader 1 and 2) and Scaling (Certified Agile Scaling Practitioner). There is no standalone agile coaching certification in that list.

Agile coaching now sits in a micro-credential category called Leadership & Coaching, carrying titles such as Introduction to Agile Coaching, Becoming an Agile Coach, Agile Coaching Skills, Coaching for Change and Coaching for Transformation. The organisation also opened an AI & Emerging Practices category with AI for Scrum Masters, AI for Product Owners and AI for Product Discovery and Strategy.

Scrum Alliance's own 2025 annual report frames the shift plainly. It reports nearly 1.8 million professionals in its community and more than 100,000 credentials issued during 2025, and sets a 2026 theme of "Agility is the Foundation for AI". The chief executive's letter contains the sentence that most directly answers the question this article asks: enterprises "cannot rely solely on methodology or framework specialists. They need organizational enablers."

Scaled Agile rebuilt its flagship certification around AI

Scaled Agile released an AI-Empowered SAFe Agilist course and exam on 24 February 2026, adding AI-empowered SAFe, prompt crafting and responsible AI to the syllabus while keeping the 45-question, 90-minute exam format. Existing SAFe 6 Agilists upgrade by completing a 45-minute Essential AI Skills module, free of charge, after which the certification updates automatically.

On 23 June 2026 the company released AI-Native SAFe, positioned as an operating model for organisations placing AI at the centre rather than a tool category bolted onto unchanged structures. Scaled Agile reports more than 2 million practitioners trained and more than 20,000 enterprises and government agencies using SAFe across 60 countries. Core SAFe continues to be supported alongside it.

Note what the upgrade path implies. A flagship enterprise certification absorbed the largest technology shift of the decade through a 45-minute module. That is a defensible commercial decision and a poor proxy for capability, and it is the clearest single argument for treating certification and capability as separate purchases.

ICAgile unbundled from the other direction

ICAgile, historically the body most associated with the agile coaching learning path, now runs a parallel micro-credential line including an AI for Products skills collection and a Leadership Essentials collection alongside its certification tracks. The same unbundling, from a different starting point.

The five bodies compared

The 2023 version of this article compared three organisations. A current comparison needs five, because the coaching question now spans bodies that did not feature in the original.

Two things stand out across the row on coaching. Only Scaled Agile still offers anything resembling an enterprise coaching certification, and it is a consultant credential rather than a coaching one. And the two bodies with the strongest coaching heritage, Scrum Alliance and ICAgile, both now deliver coaching as modules rather than as a certification.

A third point is easy to miss. While PMI was retiring its agile coaching certifications it was adding an AI one, listing PMI Certified Professional in Managing AI among its specialised certifications. The budget did not disappear from these organisations. It moved.

What the job market data actually shows

A large amount of published commentary claims that agile coach demand and day rates have collapsed. The most widely repeated version of the claim is that UK contract rates fell roughly 30 percent, to around 435 pounds per day.

Checked against IT Jobs Watch, which tracks the UK IT vacancy market directly, that claim does not hold for the current period. In the six months to 22 August 2026, UK contract vacancies citing Agile Coach numbered 45, against 24 in the same period of 2025, and the median day rate was 550 pounds, an increase of 30.18 percent year on year rather than a fall. On the permanent side, Agile Coach vacancies numbered 17 with a median salary of 80,000 pounds, up 9.22 percent. Scrum Master vacancies numbered 69 with a median of 70,000 pounds, up 16.66 percent.

The real pattern is not a collapse in value. It is a separation between job titles and skills.

In the same window, Scrum appeared as a required skill in 1,597 UK permanent vacancies and the Scaled Agile Framework in 380, with SAFe rising 72 rank places year on year. The job titles that the certifications are named after appeared far less often: Scrum Master in 69 vacancies, down 58 rank places, and Agile Coach in 17, down 83 places.

Read together, those figures describe a market that still wants the practices and has largely stopped hiring dedicated people to own them. Salaries and rates rose because the roles that remain are fewer and more senior, not because demand broadened. For an enterprise buyer the implication is direct: the capability needs to live inside roles people already hold, which is what the certification bodies signalled when they moved coaching into micro-credentials.

Two limits on this data are worth stating. It covers the UK only, and vacancy counts at this level are small enough that a single quarter can move a percentage sharply. Treat the direction as reliable and any individual percentage as indicative.

When a certification is worth buying

A certification is the right purchase when the thing you need is standardisation, entry, or an external requirement. Four cases hold up.

You need one vocabulary across many teams. When 40 teams use six different definitions of a backlog, the value of a certification is the shared language, not the individual competence. SAFe is built for this case and the vacancy data shows it is the framework enterprises still name most often after Scrum itself. Certify broadly and shallowly here, not narrowly and deeply.

Someone is entering the role. CSM and PSM I both do the job of getting a new Scrum Master to a common baseline in two days. Scrum.org costs less over time because its certifications do not expire and carry no renewal fee, while Scrum Alliance offers a larger community and more local training availability. Either is defensible. Neither tells you whether the person can handle a hostile stakeholder.

A buyer or regulator asks for it. Public sector tenders and some procurement frameworks specify named credentials. PMI-ACP is the usual answer because it is framework-agnostic and ISO-accredited. This is a compliance purchase and should be budgeted as one.

You are standing up an internal enablement function. SAFe Program Consultant remains the only credential in this comparison designed to license someone to teach a framework internally at scale. If your model is train-the-trainer, that is the one that does the job.

When a certification is the wrong purchase

The failure mode is buying a certification when the actual need is capability, and then measuring the wrong thing.

You want better coaching outcomes. No coaching certification currently assesses coaching in practice under enterprise conditions. All three bodies with a coaching heritage now deliver this as short modules, which is an honest signal about what a certificate can and cannot evidence. Buy supervised practice and assess on real engagements instead.

You are trying to justify headcount. The vacancy data shows the market moving away from dedicated agile roles. A wave of new coach certifications will not create the internal demand that the external market has already reduced.

You want AI capability. The AI content added to agile certifications in 2026 is genuine but deliberately light. A 45-minute module attached to SAFe Agilist, or a Scrum Alliance micro-credential such as AI for Scrum Masters, establishes vocabulary. It does not prepare anyone to redesign a delivery process around probabilistic tooling, evaluate model output quality, or make the governance calls that follow. Those need their own curriculum, which is a separate budget line and a separate provider decision.

Course completion is your success metric. Completion proves attendance. Assess a real artefact produced after the training, and compare the trained population against a comparable untrained one where the organisation is large enough to allow it.

What to do with a certified coach bench

Many enterprises spent the 2015 to 2022 period building a population of certified agile coaches and Scrum Masters, and are now holding capability the market has repriced. Three moves are working.

Re-anchor the role to delivery outcomes rather than ceremony. The strongest surviving version of this role in the vacancy data is a delivery-facing hybrid, not a process facilitator. That is a job description change and a manager expectation change before it is a training change.

Move framework knowledge into existing roles. If Scrum appears in 1,597 vacancies and Scrum Master in 69, the skill has become an expectation of engineers, product managers and delivery leads. Distributing it through short modules to people who already hold those roles matches how the market now buys it.

Retrain toward the work that is growing rather than shrinking. Agile coaches carry three things that transfer well into AI adoption programmes: facilitation under resistance, working with teams rather than at them, and comfort with iterative delivery under uncertainty. What they usually lack is the technical literacy to judge where AI genuinely changes a process and the governance vocabulary to make it defensible. That gap is trainable and it is a much better investment than another framework certification.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Certified Agile Coach certification still available?

Not under that name at Scrum Alliance. Its current certification list has no standalone agile coaching certification, and coaching is delivered as micro-credentials in the Leadership & Coaching category. PMI's Disciplined Agile Coach (DAC) certification was retired in 2025, with the final exam sitting on 30 November 2025. Existing DAC holders keep the credential.

Which agile certification is most in demand in 2026?

Measured by how often the framework is named in UK permanent vacancies in the six months to 22 August 2026, Scrum leads at 1,597 and the Scaled Agile Framework follows at 380, with SAFe the only one rising in rank year on year. Measured by the certification title itself, demand is far smaller, which is the central finding of this article.

Do agile certifications expire?

It depends on the body. Scrum.org certifications do not expire and carry no renewal fee. Scrum Alliance certifications renew periodically against continuing education units. SAFe certifications renew annually. PMI credentials renew through professional development units. Over a five year horizon the renewal model matters more to total cost than the initial course price.

Is CSM or PSM better?

For an individual entering the role, either works. PSM I is assessment-based and costs less over time because it never expires. CSM requires attending a course with a certified trainer and gives access to a larger community and more local training options. Neither evidences capability beyond a baseline understanding of the framework.

What is AI-Native SAFe?

An operating model released by Scaled Agile on 23 June 2026 for organisations that place AI at the centre of how they work, rather than treating it as a tool added to unchanged structures. It sits alongside Core SAFe, which continues to be supported. Separately, the SAFe Agilist course and exam were updated to an AI-Empowered version on 24 February 2026.

Should we still send people on agile training if we are moving to AI-led delivery?

Yes for the framework literacy, no for the role. Teams still need a shared way to plan, size and sequence work, and the vacancy data shows employers still expect it. What no longer justifies a dedicated certification budget is the standalone coaching role, because the market has moved that capability into roles people already hold.
